How to Get a Windows Live Mail Account

Aug 24, 2009 03:49 PM

Do you want to be one of the Hotmail VIP's users, but can't figure out a way to do it? It requires using a trick to upgrade your old 2 MB hotmail account and then enrolling in Windows Live. Follow these instructions to get a Windows Live Mail account and a 2000 MB Hotmail account.

This is an obsolete version. You can now get an @live.com email address without doing all this at [1] and press sign up.

Log in to your current 2 MB Hotmail Account.

Go to "Options" and click on the "Personal" tab on the left hand side.

Click "Language" and select English.

Click "My Profile" and change the country to USA, the ZIP code to 90001 and the state to California. Be sure to save your changes. Your account storage should be elevated from 2MB to 25MB.

Wait until it is elevated to 250MB (about 2 weeks).

You have done all this because you can only sign up for Windows Live Mail with a 250MB Hotmail Account.

Go to http://ideas.live.com.

Click "If you are a beta tester, sign in here."

Find the square which says "Windows Live Mail beta."

Click "Learn more".

Go to "Sign Up".

Enter your Hotmail address, the same that you used in the previous steps.

In about a month, you'll receive an invitation to join Windows Live Mail.

Click "Join Now".

Accept the Terms of Use.

Now you should have a standard Hotmail account with 2000MB.

In about two weeks, you will see a welcome message that will allow you to choose between "New Windows Live Mail Experience" and "Classic Hotmail View".

Choose one, and start enjoying Windows Live Mail!

Tips

  • It's a lot easier to just with 5600MB storage (and counting). See the related wikiHow below.

Warnings

  • Easter eggs such as this do not universally work for all users. Report your success or failure with this method on the discussion page of this article.
  • You may consider that this method is not as much an Easter-egg as it is a potential violation of Microsoft's terms of service. Changing your location to USA, California if this is not the case is a potential violation of Microsoft's terms of service.
  • Try "Classic Hotmail View" before leaving the beta!
  • Some users report that the "old" Hotmail is a little easier to use than the new "improved" version. Anyway, to return to the old Hotmail, just go to "Options" and click "Beta opt out" Note that you must sign up for Windows Live Mail again to use it.
